Saved To Serve

We are a non-profit faithbased ministry to disenfranchised men and women, to aid them with housing and initial employment references while providing services to the local community at a suggested donation.

In addition to these services, we also provide a three to six month residential program wherein each participant volunteers his or her service to the community for a specified number of hours per week while seekingregular employment. We will collaborate and network with employers, agencies, organizations, groups, and individuals whenever possible. Our hope is to provide residents with a broad base of opportunities.

Hispanic Center of Western Michigan

The Supporting Our Leaders (SOL) Program is an anti-violence gang intervention program that assists Hispanic males, age 14 to 21, and their families to live healthy, productive and violence-free lives.  SOL youth seek refuge from gangs, in order to have a better life.  SOL provides mental health, substance abuse, and gang exit counseling, workforce development, intensive home and academic case management, positive socialization opportunities, leadership and life skills training and monthly parent meetings.  The SOL Program seeks caring adults to serve as mentors to SOL youth that are in the exit process and need additional support to maintain their positive progress during this vulnerable stage.  To provide consistency in the lives of the youth, we ask for a minimum of a six month commitment for at least 4 hours per month.  Mentors must pass a criminal background and reference check and if transporting youth, must have a valid drivers license, proof of insurance and have their car inspected for proper seat belt funtioning.  Mentors are not required to be bilingual.  At this time, all SOL youth speak English, but most have monolingual Spanish-speaking parents.  Mentors will receive mentor orientation and training, which will include Latino gang awareness, plus ongoing support from the SOL Program staff.

We need volunteers who are available at these times:  Evenings, weekends

This volunteer opportunity is available to the following types of volunteers:  Must be at least 5 years older than the mentee; 19+ years of age, and who can give at least 4 hours per month for a minumum of 6 months.

Boys and Girls Clubs of GR Youth Commonwealth

Bridging the Gap is a program designed for the academic success of middle school-aged African-American males, by motivating and enhancing their skills through the discipline of sports and arts, with the guidance of mentors.

Bridging the Gap focuses on two factors that build the linear relationships:

1. Personal and emotional factor programs improving their quality of life.  Having a high quality of life was the strongest emotional perdictor of academic success among school-age black males.  Findings suggest that their academic success is more dependent upon emotional well-being than their female counterparts.

2. Social and environmental factor programs will supplement school efforts.  This will include programs in the areas of sports, arts, and technology, with resources to build and maintain school-based activities.  We will also work to improve the dietary practices of our participants, which is associated with higher academic achievement.
